6/12/2023 0 Comments Dr seuss the lorax 2012![]() So, is it silly and stupid sometimes? Yes, of course. That's a rare lesson, and one I'm really pleased to see in this movie. This can happen to YOU if you're not careful anybody can hurt the planet if they don't pay attention. Obliviousness is just as dangerous as maliciousness, and that's a really powerful lesson. That's FANTASTIC, and here's why: that's how the world really is! Companies don't sit around all day cackling about how much smog they're pumping into the atmosphere it's a process, and something that happened gradually. He's not evil, but he lets his success get to his head, and that brings about his own downfall and the destruction of the forest. This Once-ler is just a stupid kid with a dream, a guy who wants to change the world. The original Once-ler was a faceless force of destruction, a shadowy embodiment of greed. Making the Once-ler human, though? BRILLIANT. It's a bit flat but perfectly enjoyable for younger kids. As far as the frame goes, it's done pretty well. ![]() ![]() A lot of people have been lamenting the "frame story" this movie adds in, as well as the idea of making the Once-ler a human character. in this case, changes from the book/original TV short. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments Real by Katy Evans![]() ![]() For more information on Katy Evans visit her website, and follow her. ![]() If what happens between Brooke and Remy is ever as light as a flirtation, it quickly becomes an erotic obsession for them both, and promises so much more. She argues that much dissatisfaction, heartache, and environmental damage results from the need to constantly accumulate, consume, and upgrade without sufficient attention to knowing when you actually have enough of the things you really need. Why had I never heard anyone talk about money like this before? Early on the author introduces the concept of ‘enough’ as the goal of personal wealth. This book is one of those engrossing texts that offers light-bulb moments, that had me sat up in my chair, highlighter in hand, audibly exclaiming my delight and surprise. ![]() However, it was this book that cropped up time and again in lists of ‘must reads’, consistently achieving 5-star reviews. It was an accidental purchase, as my original intention was to buy a guide to understanding stocks and shares. The rest is a philosophical journey asking some truly existential questions of the reader. What is curious from the outset is that only a fraction of the content gives advice on investing. First published 25 years ago, the revised edition of this bestseller would sit more comfortably in the self-help and personal development section than in business and finance. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Arthur's Halloween by Marc Brown![]() Arthur’s greedy sister was redeemed too late to alter that book’s shallow feeling. ![]() I sampled “Arthur’s Christmas”, 1984 but disliked it. In my birthday card my nephew asked to go back to the cemetery soon. We live next to a cemetery and I take the kids often and they wondered why the children thought that was scary. My nephew is scared of nothing so he liked that in the end Arthur was brave. This book covers the fact that Halloween can be a little scary. It's a lovely Halloween theme with warm cozy art. I couldn't tell with his nose not being pointy. I kept wondering what animal Arthur is and so I looked him up and Arthur and his family are Aardvarks. ![]() I don't know that that ever goes away without learning to work facts. It's interesting to think of how we can get sucked into these rumors that can create fear. Of course the children talk about the old Lady in the run down house being a witch and a rumor is spread that one kid went in and never came out. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Admiral william h mcraven book![]() ![]() He uses many anecdotes from his career not eye-bulging, macho-military stories, but tales of connection, spirit, and hope. ![]() Each principle is a bit of a cliché, but what some of them lack in originality, they make up for in clarity and authenticity. It wasn’t just the voyeuristic aura of the Helga exhibition, the museum’s first one-man show granted to a living American painter, that annoyed critics and-according to Neil Harris’s recent book about its longtime director J. Helga Testorf, a GI bride and homesick mother of four, served as a nurse in the household of Karl Kuerner, a machine gunner for the German army during World War I, and was a neighbor of the Wyeths at Chadds Ford, in the Revolutionary War district of the Brandywine Valley in southeastern Pennsylvania, an area dotted with picturesque farms and the secluded mansions of the du Ponts. ![]() ![]() This was the notorious Helga show, or striptease, as John Updike-one of the few critics to find things to admire in the 1987 exhibition-described it: several hundred pictures executed on the sly (both Wyeth’s wife and Helga’s husband were, reportedly, kept in the dark) from 1971 to 1985, representing a striking German woman with long, reddish-blond hair, often depicted, clothed or in the nude, in pensive reverie.
